During my trip, I couldn’t help but notice something truly special. It’s not just the beaches or the absence of city hustle—it’s the slower pace and a strong sense of pride that really stood out.

1. Nature that Slows You Down

You can’t mention Terengganu without highlighting its nature: stunning beaches, islands, and forests. With today’s fast-paced, high-stress demands of modern life, nature serves as a powerful remedy for grounding us, and Terengganu has it all. Pristine rainforests, vast coastline, stunning islands, sparkling beaches—you name it.

Beaches & Islands as Everyday Escape

If you have visited Terengganu or come from the state, you should recognise that the peaceful beaches alone justify why Terengganu is the happiest state in Malaysia. Globally, Terengganu is renowned for its crown jewels, including Perhentian Island, Redang Island, and Kapas Island, all famous for snorkelling, diving, and white-sand beaches. Beyond these tourist spots, what many may not realise is how deeply these natural treasures are woven into the daily lives of the locals, and this is what genuinely brings them joy, whether they realise it or not.

Every beach in Terengganu looks like they belong in a movie.

Simple Joys on the Water

Another important aspect of happiness here is the daily boat trips that blend relaxation, adventure, and a connection with nature. While it might seem like just another typical day on the water, the wind, the colour of the sky, and the shapes of the clouds on each trip unknowingly give you a boost of much-needed daily serotonin. That said, I am genuinely envious of those living in coastal areas, who can observe daily life there instead of rushing through overwhelming urban attractions.

Boat tours this breathtaking are common in Terengganu.

2. Pride Rooted in Faith & Tradition

Terengganu is well known as a destination where history and local traditions are very much alive. Another thread that binds happiness in this state is the values, especially religion and old traditions. The people derive their identity and purpose from deep-rooted faith and daily traditions, buffering them against the exhausting rush of modern, urbanised life.

Strong Religious & Spiritual Foundation

Islam is the main religion in Terengganu and a great source of pride for the community. The state is celebrated for its rich Islamic history, starting with the famous Inscribed Stone (Batu Bersurat), which marks the spread of Islam in the area. It carries a proclamation from a respected former ruler, encouraging everyone to embrace Islam and follow the 10 basic Sharia laws. Since then, daily life in Terengganu has been deeply influenced by Islamic values, leading to a slower, more mindful way of living that many find inspiring.

To this day, Batu Bersurat is still visited at the Terengganu State Museum, serving as a testament to the locals’ history.

Living Heritage Everyday

One thing I noticed is that the culture in Terengganu is really something you live alongside every day. It shows up in the smallest details, from the way houses are built to the craftsmanship of traditional boats still used today. Take the Bangau Perahu, for example. At first glance, it might look like a decorative element on a traditional fishing boat, but it carries a deeper meaning. This carved wooden structure at the bow reflects the artistry and identity of Terengganu’s fishing communities.

Even hotels use Bangau Perahu as their centrepiece

The same goes for the traditional Terengganu house design. Even modern houses in Terengganu today retain the horn-like roof structure called “Buah Guntung” or “Tunjuk Langit”. These designs aren’t random—they represent regional identity and traditional craftsmanship that has stood the test of time, never abandoned for the sake of modernisation. I believe that’s where Terengganu’s happiness comes from.
